Other Info	Digital Storytelling Workshop Series Do you have a personal story to tell? Are you a non profit that does important work and want to spread the word? Learn how to create a short (3 minute or less) video. This 3 part series will teach you how to script, storyboard, shoot, create, and edit a short digital story. May 28 1pm-5pm Session 1: Preproduction- Learn how to write and storyboard a short digital story. Decide what images to use and how to obtain/create them. June 4 1pm-5pm Session 2: Production- Learn how to shoot video, scan still photos, record audio v/o for the digital story. June 11 1pm-5pm Session 3: Postproduction- Learn how to use imovie to create and finish your digital stories. This workshop meets on 3 successive Saturday afternoons. The finished works will be screened at ComFest in the Solar tent and posted on youtube. Participants must attend all three sessions. The total cost for all three sessions is $50. Scholarship spots are available to low income/unemployed folks sponsored by a Comfest grant (send requests to info@chrisawards.org ). Please send a one or two paragraph “story” to info@chrisawards.org that you wish to tell as your workshop project when registering for this workshop series. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown. Followed by a discussion panel consisting of Matt Trokan from the Sierra Club and other fracking experts. Admission is free. May 5, May 12, May 19, 7:00p – 9:00p Jazz Academy, 4th Floor Conference Room, 769 East Long Street Learn to craft your own screenplays by mastering the most common storytelling structure used in film and television. In this interactive workshop series, participants will acquire the skills to balance character development and plot advancement through the three-act format. Act One: Introduction May 5 This session will present an overview of the screenwriting process, the creation of complex characters, rich backstories and establish the dramatic premise through the “inciting incident” that determines the direction of the plot. Act Two: Confrontation May 12 Picking up where the first session left off, the second act will present the lead character’s journey, its multiple obstacles and the plot reversals that place the protagonist nearest and farthest from attaining the objective of the story. Act Three: Resolution May 19 The final workshop will focus on the culmination of the plot and climax of the story. Award-winning and critically acclaimed examples, adaptations and exceptions to the three-act structure will round out a review of the workshop series. Presenter: J.R. McMillan has a BA from Marshall University with a concentration in Journalism and Mass Communications and has worked as an opinion writer, columnist, photographer, publicist and public radio producer. Other Info	During the past quarter century, a myth has developed that poor people are lazy and that providing them with government assistance leads to dependency and a lack of personal responsibility. The reality is very different. The poverty rate dropped sharply in response to the War on Poverty programs, only to level off in the late 1970s when those programs started getting cut back, and increasing through the Reagan-Bush era attacks on social welfare. The slight drop in the late-1990s has already disappeared, and the poverty rate has skyrocketed during the so-called Great Recession. The plight of the poor has just gotten worse. While the accepted wisdom now is that public interventions do not work, that is a myth: the reality is that they have and still could. The Edge of Joy is a documentary that follows an ensemble cast of Nigerian doctors, midwives and families to the frontlines of maternal care. Inside a maternity ward, the film chronicles distressed labors, deaths, and miraculous survival. Outside, lack of blood supply transportation and family planning are examined as causes of the cycle that kills more than 36,000 Nigerian women each year. The central characters in The Edge of Joy are the people deep within the Nigerian culture who know its misconceptions, its limitations, but also its capabilities. Narrated by award winning journalist, Eliza Griswold, and featuring animation by Yoni Goodman, this portrait of pregnancy and childbirth shows the consequences of poor maternal health as it explores the nuances and complexities of bringing emerging health technologies to the developing world. Dawn Sinclair Shapiro directed, produced and wrote the feature length documentary “Inside the Handy Writers’ Colony,” which aired nationally on PBS in 2008. She began her journalism career working for the award-winning news magazine program CBS News Sunday Morning. Dawn has worked as a Producer, Writer, and Online Editor for Tribune Broadcasting, CNBC, MSNBC, Dateline NBC, and Chicago Public Radio. Her new film, “The Edge of Joy,” about maternal mortality in Nigeria was called “eye-opening” by Global Health magazine: “‘The Edge of Joy’ is a timely rallying cry against women accepting the perilous status quo.” Director Dawn Sinclair Shapiro will do a q+a after the screening.
