with "Filmmakers Forum: An Evening of LGBT Shorts" on November 16 at 7pm at
Studio 35 Cinema in Clintonville with three award-winning filmmakers
presenting and discussing their work at a pre-screening reception and
a post screening Q & A. The event is co sponsored by Stonewall Columbus.

From Iran and Mexico via Montreal the CIFVF presents Kaveh Nabatian’s film “Vapor”.
A short film set in Mexico City over the course of a single day, Vapor is the true story
of an older man’s decision to accept his homosexuality. Told without any dialogue,
this short film is a cinematic exploration of shame, catharsis, and ultimately, transcendence.

From New York City Lee Percy’s film “Dreaming American”
is about a handsome young illegal immigrant who finds work as a
go go dancer in a gay bar while he pursues legal status and a career as an
actor in New York City in this contemporary tale about the pursuit of happiness.
Based on a true story, Dreaming American is sometimes humorous, sometimes
sad but always a moving story of the struggle to make it in America. Starring Praq Rado,
Giancarlo Esposito (from Breaking Bad), and Nancy Opel. Actor Praq Rado
will also be in attendance at the screening.

And from Ohio, Kailyne R. Water’s film
“f my c” is a film about a journey for sexual intimacy. Hindered by experiences
with childhood sexual abuse, a couple work in partnership to try to create
an awareness that is meaningful to them.

The Studio 35 Cinema box office opens at 6pm. Early arrival is recommended
as seating is limited. Admission is only $5.
Rio Tinto threatened the miners in Boron--either accept their cutbacks in the new contract or find themselves locked out of work. On January 30th, 2010 the workers voted unaminously to reject the company's proposed contract and on January 31st, 2010, they were locked out of work. The workers faced financial hardships but stood strong during the 107 day lockout and beat back a multinational corporation. It further reveals Rio Tinto's egregious practices in the U.S. and around the globe--from Michigan to Australia to Bougainville.

Other Info

CONTESTED STREETS explores the history and culture of New York City streets from pre-automobile times to the present. This examination allows for an understanding of how the city - though the most well served by mass transit in the United States - has slowly relinquished what was a rich, multi-dimensional conception of the street as public space to a mindset that prioritizes the rapid movement of cars and trucks over all other functions.

Central to the story is a comparison of New York to what is experienced in London, Paris and Copenhagen. Interviews and footage shot in these cities showcase how limiting automobile use in recent years has improved air quality, minimized noise pollution and enriched commercial, recreational and community interaction. London's congestion pricing scheme, Paris' BRT (bus rapid transit) and Copenhagen's bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure are all examined in depth. New York City, though to many the most vibrant and dynamic city on Earth, still has lessons to learn from Old Europe.

Admission is $5.
This screening is co sponsored by the Sierra Club and MORPC.

The reality is very different. The poverty rate dropped sharply in response to the War on Poverty programs, only to level off in the late 1970s when those programs started getting cut back, and increasing through the Reagan-Bush era attacks on social welfare. The slight drop in the late-1990s has already disappeared, and the poverty rate has skyrocketed during the so-called Great Recession. The plight of the poor has just gotten worse. While the accepted wisdom now is that public interventions do not work, that is a myth: the reality is that they have and still could.
