In a privatized American Internet, is big business “Big Brother”
or does the free market protect and serve the needs of the average
citizen with its invisible hand? With the simple act of swapping files,
barbershop quartet baritone Robb Topolski finds himself at ground
zero of a landmark case whose outcome will affect the rights of every
American citizen.
Following one man’s personal quest to defend what he believes to be
his inalienable rights, BARBERSHOP PUNK examines the critical issues
surrounding the future of the American Internet and what it takes to challenge
the status quo.

Contemplating the future of the American Internet and the inalienable
rights under review, the film features discussions with Ian MacKaye,
Damian Kulash of OK Go, Henry Rollins, Janeane Garofalo, EFF’s
John Perry Barlow, U.S. Congressman Chip Pickering, Congressman
Marsha Blackburn, Free Form DJ Jim Ladd, Clinton White House Press
Often the difference between a good indie production and one that is unwatchable is audio. Unfortunate but true. The Columbus Film Council, in its efforts to help filmmakers in Central Ohio, is offering a location audio production workshop with master filmmaker Tom Hayes. Hayes, of Foglight Films, has been working in the “industry” for over 30 years, as an audio tech, cameraman, DP, and Avid Editor. He currently teaches postproduction at Ohio University, but previous to that position Tom worked on many, many productions as the “audio guy”. Tom’s own independent films have screened around the world and have received too many grants, awards, and accolades to list.

In this workshop Tom will be covering "best practices" in audio production for video and film including basic equipment requirements, mike placement, booming strategies, double system and single system recording, and preparing audio for post production.

Other Info

CONTESTED STREETS explores the history and culture of New York City streets from pre-automobile times to the present. This examination allows for an understanding of how the city - though the most well served by mass transit in the United States - has slowly relinquished what was a rich, multi-dimensional conception of the street as public space to a mindset that prioritizes the rapid movement of cars and trucks over all other functions.

Central to the story is a comparison of New York to what is experienced in London, Paris and Copenhagen. Interviews and footage shot in these cities showcase how limiting automobile use in recent years has improved air quality, minimized noise pollution and enriched commercial, recreational and community interaction. London's congestion pricing scheme, Paris' BRT (bus rapid transit) and Copenhagen's bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure are all examined in depth. New York City, though to many the most vibrant and dynamic city on Earth, still has lessons to learn from Old Europe.

Admission is $5.
This screening is co sponsored by the Sierra Club and MORPC.

The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.
The reality is very different. The poverty rate dropped sharply in response to the War on Poverty programs, only to level off in the late 1970s when those programs started getting cut back, and increasing through the Reagan-Bush era attacks on social welfare. The slight drop in the late-1990s has already disappeared, and the poverty rate has skyrocketed during the so-called Great Recession. The plight of the poor has just gotten worse. While the accepted wisdom now is that public interventions do not work, that is a myth: the reality is that they have and still could.
Studio 35
3055 Indianola Ave
Columbus, Ohio 43202
Free

Free Stella Artois and cupcakes will be served.

The Edge of Joy is a documentary that follows an ensemble cast of Nigerian doctors, midwives and families to the frontlines of maternal care. Inside a maternity ward, the film chronicles distressed labors, deaths, and miraculous survival. Outside, lack of blood supply transportation and family planning are examined as causes of the cycle that kills more than 36,000 Nigerian women each year.
The central characters in The Edge of Joy are the people deep within the Nigerian culture who know its misconceptions, its limitations, but also its capabilities. Narrated by award winning journalist, Eliza Griswold, and featuring animation by Yoni Goodman, this portrait of pregnancy and childbirth shows the consequences of poor maternal health as it explores the nuances and complexities of bringing emerging health technologies to the developing world.

Dawn Sinclair Shapiro directed, produced and wrote the feature length documentary “Inside the Handy Writers’ Colony,” which aired nationally on PBS in 2008. She began her journalism career working for the award-winning news magazine program CBS News Sunday Morning. Dawn has worked as a Producer, Writer, and Online Editor for Tribune Broadcasting, CNBC, MSNBC, Dateline NBC, and Chicago Public Radio. Her new film, “The Edge of Joy,” about maternal mortality in Nigeria was called “eye-opening” by Global Health magazine: “‘The Edge of Joy’ is a timely rallying cry against women accepting the perilous status quo.”

Director Dawn Sinclair Shapiro will do a q+a after the screening.
